NEW this month! Our team is now analyzing rates using 1000 kWh instead of 2000 kWh as the estimated monthly consumption used for price comparison. We made this change because according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the residential average monthly consumption in Texas is 1140 kWh (in 2019).
We will spice things up this month by focusing on green energy. We will bring answers to a question that you may have wondered about:
If I “go green” with my electricity plan, how would my bill be impacted?
Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* are analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by a REP.
In this delivery area, prices are globally stable for the fixed rate plans. The only variation was an increase of 1% of the average rate in the fixed rate category explained by a few REPs changing their price but the global picture is similar to the previous month. PULSE POWER LLC and ENERGY TO GO are the two providers that joined the game in May in this first category. Those 2 REPs were not offering plans on the Power to Choose website the previous month.
The variable rate category is also stable. We only see a variation with the average rate which is a slight decrease explained by a few REPs changing their price in this category.

The market is remarkably stable for the 100% green products between April and May 2021. We captured an increase of 33% for the number of REPs in the fixed-rate category:
OCTOPUS ENERGY was only offering plans with a different duration before and variable rate before. PULSE POWER LLC and ENERGY TO GO started to show offers in the 100% green category also on the Power to Choose website in May 2021. The previous report was showing slight decreases in price. 2This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by a REP.
Looking at this table, on average a 100% green plan is 6% more expensive if you choose a 12-month fixed rate plan and 24% if you prefer a variable rate plan. The lack of offers in the 100% green variable rate category can explain the difference between the two types of rate plans: only 3 REPs are offering the 100% green product versus 11 for the non-green product.
This “more expensive” conclusion needs to be put into perspective for your yearly consumption:
For a fixed rate plan, using the lowest rates from the table above, you will pay the same price if you choose a 100% green plan. Regarding the variable rate, your bill will be approximately $19 more expensive every month if you go green (assuming a usage of 1000 kWh/ per month).
Another good option for you, if you want to restore the balance for not only your electricity consumption but also your daily activities (flight, car’s journey, events …), is to purchase carbon offsets separately. Companies like Terrapass 3 do all the calculations for you and offer you monthly subscription plans or one-time payments to offset your carbon footprint depending on your lifestyle. This could give you more options for your electricity plan and possibly be a cheaper way for you to offset your electricity consumption depending on what kind of electricity plan you are looking for.
What is the difference between green plans and carbon offsets?
Even if they both serve the same purpose to reduce our footprint, they are different in many ways:
Unit of measure: Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of CO₂ while green plans purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) and are measured in MWh.
Purpose: When you subscribe to a 100% green electricity plan, you will support directly renewable electricity development as you encourage the use, expansion and maintenance of renewable energy (such as Wind Power, Biomass generation etc.) Through RECs your Energy Provider will substantiate your consumption renewable-ness. To learn more about RECs and Offsets, consult this document from the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency). When you buy carbon offsets, you will support projects and activities that avoid or reduce greenhouse gas (GHG emissions to the atmosphere).
Consumer Claims: If your goal is to remove CO2 directly, buy carbon offsets. If you prefer to support long term renewable energy generators, go for a 100% green plan.

*Data obtained from powertochoose.org (Power to Choose) for the days from 5/1/2021 to 5/31/2021. The tables above list the lowest price in cents/kWh offered by each retail electricity provider (REP) for a given type of plan for a monthly usage of 1000 kWh. If more than one product was available from the same REP for a given type of plan, EnergySavings.com only included the one with the lowest rate in its analysis. Please note that as products and rates may change at any time in the day on Power to Choose; EnergySavings.com’s analysis is based on information captured in its single daily snapshot, and therefore cannot guarantee that every product and rate made available in the month has been captured. Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans. Those documents are available on the Power to Choose site if the plan is still currently offered. The rates listed may differ if the REP has changed its pricing.
