Electricity Rates in Texas: Best Electricity Providers for Deregulated Delivery Areas in January 2022

We are delivering our 14th monthly analysis based on data pulled from Power to Choose! If you missed our special anniversary article last month, go have a look here. In this article we discussed the best electricity providers in Texas for each deregulated delivery area in 2021. We looked at them from a price, customer satisfaction, and reliability standpoint and identified a list of the most established electricity providers – those that have been in business for over 15 years – to help us with our year-over-year analysis.

We know that choosing the best electric providers can be difficult, so we continue to provide data and analysis for you to make an informed choice. In this article you will find a similar top 3 lowest price analysis, month over month trend review, as well as a year over year analysis again using our list of most established energy providers.

As our observations for each utility in the Texas deregulated delivery areas are similar, we have written this article using the data from just the Oncor delivery area and included the same data tables for each of the other 4 utilities at the end of this article for reference.

One key difference is that in Centerpoint, SOUTHERN FEDERAL POWER LLC offered the lowest price of the month, while in the other 4 utility areas, JUST ENERGY and SOUTHERN FEDERAL POWER LLC were tied for the lowest price spot.

The table above shows rates for 3 categories of plans for the most established electricity providers in Texas in Oncor. This list of providers was built last month while we were answering the question: “Who is the best electricity provider in 2021?”
Our team closely watches the electricity providers certified at least 15 years ago. It is interesting to compare their prices year over year to help answer some common questions you may have when choosing your next electricity plan in Texas. You can find the same tables for other delivery areas at the end of this article.

  • Should I subscribe to a long-term fixed rate plan?
Let’s look at some examples from the table above for Oncor to answer this question.
TXU ENERGY: This electricity provider did not offer 24-month and 36-month plans last year. Their rates increased compared to last year for the same period (12-month plans were 11.2 cents/kWh in 2021 and are now 14.2 cent/kWh). Considering this increasing trend year over year, subscribing for a 24- or 36-month plan with TXU ENERGY seems like a good idea if you’re looking for price stability, although there are other REPs with longer term plans with lower rates.
RELIANT: Looking at this electricity provider, the answer is obvious: If you signed up last year for a 24-month plan, you will be still locked in at 8.7 cents/kWh instead of renewing for a new rate starting at 13.2 cents/kWh for a 12-month plan. RELIANT is offering 12-, 24- and 36-month electricity plans in 2022 and was only offering 12 and 24-month plans last year, giving you an opportunity to lock in your electricity rate for a longer period.
CONSTELLATION NEWENERGY INC is the only provider only offering a 36-month term electricity plan from the table above (they do offer other shorter-term products). Interestingly, they are also the only electricity provider that decreased their rates in 2022 compared to 2021 for the same month in Oncor. You might want to look into that 36-month fixed rate plan if you wish to secure a competitive rate for the next 3 years.

  • Long term fixed rate plans are cheaper?
Most of the electricity providers in the table above do seem to offer cheaper electricity rates for longer term plans, so the answer is YES in January 2022 in the Oncor delivery area! Looking at DIRECT ENERGY, for example, the 12-month plan shows 13.0 cents/kWh, while the 24-month is 12.5 cents/kWh, and the 36-month is 12.3 cents/kWh.

2Trends show the percentage change in the rate from the two listed months for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered that type of plan in each month.  The “Highest” row shows the highest price among all the lowest price plans offered by REPs offering that type of plan for each month. Filters applied are: Fixed rate only, Excluding 100% green plans, as well as Minimum Usage Fee/Credit and Tiered Pricing plans.
3Lowest rates captured in January 2021 and January 2022 for 12-, 24- and 36-month fixed rate plans. Only including REPs that constantly offered electricity plans every month on the PTC website and certified by PUCT at least 15 years as of 1/18/2022. Filters applied are: Fixed rate only, Excluding Minimum Usage Fee/Credit and Tiered Pricing. The REPs in this table were all showing plans on Power To Choose in January 2021 and January 2022; the lack of any rates in any particular month means they had offers of other contract terms.

Data obtained from powertochoose.org (Power to Choose) for each day of the months of January 2021, December 2021, and January 2022. The tables above list the lowest price in cents/kWh offered by each retail electricity provider (REP) for a given type of plan for a monthly usage of 1000 kWh. If more than one product was available from the same REP for a given type of plan, EnergySavings.com only included the lowest rate in its analysis. Please note that as products and rates may change at any time in the day on Power to Choose; EnergySavings.com’s analysis is based on information captured in its single daily snapshot, and therefore cannot guarantee that every product and rate made available in the month has been captured. Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. There was also about 5% data loss in each daily snapshot for the January 2021 period. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.  For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans. Those documents are available on the Power to Choose site if the plan is still currently offered. The rates listed may differ if the REP has changed their pricing.
