What are Same-Day Electricity Plans?
Same-day electricity plans aren’t necessarily a type of plan, but a free provider service. Most Texas energy providers can get your home’s power running within 24 hours of signing up for a plan or moving your service to a new address. In some cases, you can have your power connected in as little as a few hours.
While energy providers don’t usually charge a fee for same-day service, your local utility company might. Contact your utility company if you are not sure. If you don’t know who your assigned utility company is, simply type your ZIP code into EnergySavings.com. You’ll be taken to a new page with plans in your area. The utility company is listed at the top of the page, right after your ZIP code.
In deregulated energy markets, utility companies are separate from energy providers. An energy provider is the company you buy your energy from and turn to for billing and plan-related questions.
The utility company is the one that ensures your home is capable of receiving the electricity you buy from the energy provider. It’s also responsible for reading your meter, handling power outages, and fixing downed power lines.
To take advantage of same-day electricity, your home needs to have a smart energy meter. Which most homes in Texas’s deregulated energy areas have.

Who Should Consider Same-Day Electricity?
Same-day electricity plans can be a great fit for people who aren’t sure of the exact date they’ll move into their home or who want more flexibility about when their power initially turns on. It’s also great if you forget to set up your service before your move and need the power turned on quickly.
How to Get Electricity Turned on the Same Day in Texas
Texans have the power to choose when to activate their electricity service. Have the power turned on the same day by following these steps:
1. Verify that you have a smart energy meter installed at your new address. Smart meters have digital screens instead of the traditional dials or spinning disks. You can also visit SmartmeterTexas.com and register for a free account. There, you can look up what type of meter you have using your home address or your meter’s ESI ID.
2. Shop for energy plans with providers. Enter your ZIP code on our website to compare available energy plans in your area. Use the Electricity Facts Label (EFLs) to compare contract lengths, rates, and other plan details.
3. Provide the required documentation. You’ll often need to submit your personal and contact information, give your new address, and validate your identity with a government-issued ID.
4. Submit your service request by the cutoff time: Most providers have a cutoff time for power to be connected on the same calendar day. Once you enroll in a plan, you should receive a confirmation that includes your service start date.

Can I get electricity turned on Sundays in Texas?
No. Providers in Texas typically don’t turn on electricity on Sundays, although some will start your service on Saturday (excluding holidays). Otherwise, Monday through Friday is the most reliable time to initiate your service.
Do same-day electricity plans require a deposit?
Not necessarily. Same-day electricity is a service energy providers offer and isn’t tied to a specific plan. If the energy provider requires a deposit to enroll in a plan, then you’ll likely have to provide one unless you meet the criteria to have your deposit waived.
Are there fees for connecting same-day electricity service?
Energy providers don’t usually charge for same-day electricity service, but your local utility company might. Your utility company is assigned by area and isn’t the same as your energy provider. If you type your ZIP code into Energy Savings, you’ll see who your utility provider is listed at the top, right after where your ZIP code is shown.
Are there any time-of-use plans that can be turned on the same day?
Yes. Time-of-use plans, such as those offering free nights or weekends, can qualify for same-day electricity if you enroll and submit the required documentation before the provider’s cutoff time.
