The Best Electrical Service and Energy Providers in Texas

A search for “electrical service in Texas” returns a long list of electricity price comparison websites but when you search for “electrical services in Texas,” various electrician websites appear. To help you find the best electrical service possible, let’s look at all the options. From choosing an electrical contractor for your home to finding the best electricity prices in Texas, this guide has you covered.

What Are Electrical Services?

Electrical services can cover many things. It can entail paying someone to install a new wall socket in your home or paying an energy provider for supplying your electricity.

First, we’ll look at electrical services provided by an electrician. There are many reasons you may need a licensed electrician to come to your home (or business). Let’s review electrical services that are electrical repairs or changes in buildings.

What Type of Electrical Services Do Electricians Offer?

Electricians have different specialties. Electrical contractors offer a wide range of services covering domestic electrical issues, from repairs to installations.

Always ensure you employ a professional electrician for any electrical work, whether it’s for home or commercial electrical services. Electricity can be dangerous, and misuse has the potential to be deadly, so make sure the electrician you hire is licensed and certified.

Electrical repair services include:

  • Emergency service, with some companies offering 24/7 and weekend service
  • Circuit repairs
  • Exhaust fans
  • Lighting
  • Electrical wiring
  • Ceiling fans
  • Electrical panels
  • Generators

Electrical installation services include:

  • Main circuit breakers
  • Subpanels and panel upgrades
  • Circuits
  • Outlets, switches, and receptacles
  • Lighting and ceiling fans
  • Solar panels
  • Electric vehicle charger points
  • Home surge protectors
  • Electrical wiring
  • Exhaust fans

There’s a good chance you’re looking for home electrical service, which can ensure you have a secure electrical system to keep you safe from shocks and other hazards. Still, it’s worth noting that electricians also provide full services to buildings. These professionals can identify any potential issues from socket overload to degraded wiring before they become problematic.

What to Check When Choosing an Electrician

Electrician at Work Choosing Bestsource

When dining out, you choose restaurants for the occasion. A quick drive-through place is great when you’re on the road, but you may opt for something more upscale for a special celebration.

The same thought process applies when choosing an electrician. You need to hire someone suited to the job at hand and not some grab-and-hire person from a quick internet search. Along with making sure they’re certified and licensed, it’s crucial to look at how many years of experience the electrical contractor has. Be sure to ask for examples of previous work to verify they delivered quality services.

Another thing to consider when choosing an electrician is how much work the electrical project entails. Perhaps a team of electricians from one bigger company would be more suited to a whole-house job than an individual who can only work once a week.

Pricing is important, too. Ask if there is a deposit required, and if so, ask the company how much.

These guidelines are not only important if you’re upgrading your home’s electrical elements but they’re also necessary if you’re bringing electricians to work on an industrial or commercial building.

The Electrical Service Delivered to Your House

We’ve covered electrical services provided by electricians. Next up is electrical service that is delivered to buildings, both residential and commercial. In this context, the electrical service brought to a building is the amount (or volume) of electricity your electricity provider delivers.

This type of electrical service is essential because it determines how many appliances can operate in a building at any given time. Electrical service is measured in amps, or amperes. The higher a building’s amps, the more devices can run at any one time.

For example, a building with 200 amps of electrical service can run more appliances simultaneously than one with 100 amps. Our increasingly power-hungry electrical items like air conditioning and televisions mean that homes now need more amps, or electrical service.

It’s important to understand the electrical capacity of your house. Older homes in the U.S. may have just 30 amps of electrical service, although that’s rare. Some have 60 amps, which is regarded as the minimum for modern-day living, and many have 100 amps. Today, new construction in the U.S. is usually built with 200 amp electrical services, so a new home may not need to increase its amps. In modern housing, a general rule of thumb is the larger the house, the more amps required for your electrical service.

Suppose someone uses a lot of appliances simultaneously and exceeds the building’s amp limit. In that case, a circuit breaker activates and trips the power, turning it off. This prevents wires from overheating and potentially causing damage or fire.

Do I Need To Upgrade My Circuit Breaker?

It’s common for a building’s electrical demands to increase. This is because we use more and more electrical appliances more often, increasing the amount of power we need at any given time.

If your power trips regularly or you hear hissing noises coming from your breaker panel, ask a qualified electrician to inspect your building. They can assess how much electricity you’re using and make recommendations, including upgrading the amp panel. Make sure a building inspector checks the work once it’s done.

There are also some online load calculator tools, which can give you an idea of your electrical service needs.

How Many Volts Are Delivered to My Home?

Two 120-volt service wires provide homes with electrical service. In general, smaller appliances such as lights, microwave ovens, and toasters require 120-volts. Larger appliances like air conditioning units and electric heaters need 220 volts.

Electrical service reaches buildings from the power utility through two 120-volt service wires that offer a combined 240 volts of power (voltage is a measurement of electricity’s pressure or flow rate). They connect to the main service panel, often on an outside wall or inside the building, close to the electricity meter.

Electrical Services as Energy Providers

Many Texan cities and their surrounding areas benefit from a deregulated energy market that allows people to choose their energy provider. As a result, Texans can shop around for the best energy rates, with many providers offering low prices. For our purposes, we’ll concentrate on electricity rates in Texas.

How Can You Find the Best Electricity Rates in Texas?

There are numerous electricity price comparison websites for electrical services in Texas. These are handy tools, but they may not show every available offer. Remember, not all zip codes in Texas offer energy choices and different energy plans.

Electric companies offer a myriad of prices. The best electric provider for you depends on several factors. We recommend reading more about understanding your bill and the types of tariffs in our beginner’s guide to electricity in Texas.

You Have the Power to Choose Your Electricity Provider

The most powerful tool in any Texan’s search for an electricity provider is the powertochoose.org website, which is available in Spanish and English. Power to Choose helps Texans in deregulated areas search energy providers for price deals, instantly comparing Texas electricity company rates.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas runs the website as part of its commitment to customer protection and maintaining electricity delivery. Enter your zip code on the first page to see if you live in a deregulated area. If you haven’t previously selected an energy provider, the state-operated ERCOT council assigns a supplier.

If you don’t live in a deregulated area, you cannot choose or change energy providers. In that scenario, your electricity is supplied by municipalities, cooperatives, or investor-owned utilities.

There are several ways to search for suppliers on powertochoose.org. We recommend reading our beginner’s guide to electricity in Texas and our Power to Choose guide. These will help you understand your current electricity bill, usage, and rate.  Deregulated markets can offer good deals. For example, in 2019, the average electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) across the United States was 10.54 cents nationally but just 8.60 cents in Texas.

The best deal for you will depend on many factors. Filters that help narrow your search include:

  • Your average monthly electricity usage
  • Type of rate (fixed, variable, or indexed)
  • Contract term length

Once you enter your answers, the Power to Choose website will display a wide range of energy companies and prices. The left-hand sidebar allows you to customize your search filter.

Important: Never switch suppliers or sign a new deal unless you fully understand all the terms and conditions.

Examples of Texas Electricity Deals With Great Value

Some people want cheap and short-term deals, others look for longer-term options with more price security, and some want price plans that use renewable energy sources. Here are some results for a variety of searches we conducted in June 2021 (subject to change).

All examples are based on a residential home using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) electricity per month over 12 months at a variable rate. For reference, the average U.S. residential electricity use in 2019 was 887 kWh per month compared to 1,140 kWh in Texas

It’s vital to select the correct usage level. It’s tempting to choose a lower price for higher usage, but you must use at least that amount — or sometimes that exact amount — of electricity every month. If not, the electricity company may charge a much higher rate.

We encourage you to try different filters to see how the offers change. Keep a note of those you feel could be a good fit. As you’ll see, there are plenty of options. There are many companies, and each one has several offers.

Note: The Power to Choose website will automatically sort your search results from the lowest price to the most expensive, but you can adjust the setting to your preference.

Sample 1: Renewable Electricity Deals

We used the Houston zip code 77055 for a 12-month contract at a fixed rate including renewable energy. We found 39 deals.

Electricity Deals Comparison Chart Pricing

The first few companies offered 9.1 cents per kWh but only had only one-star (out of 5-star) reviews. After that, prices went as high as 13.9 cents per kWh. Other companies like Amigo Energy (3-star rating) were slightly more expensive at 9.9 cents per kWh. Always check carefully and make sure you read every offer’s fact sheet. One deal in the first six listed didn’t have any renewable energy included.

Sample 2: Long-Term Electricity Deals

We used the Wilmer, Dallas, zip code of 75172 and looked for a long-term, fixed-rate with a two- to three-year contract. It returned a whopping 60 results.

Energy companies like to reward more extended contracts with lower prices. Still, they need you to complete the deal to offer such savings. Be aware: these offers may have high cancelation fees and do not suit people who like to hop from supplier to supplier. Therefore, you need to be sure you want to tie yourself into a long contract before agreeing.

Electricity Deal Comparison Chart Pricing 2

The lowest price we found, again from a 1-star rated company, was 8.8 cents per kWh over 36 months. The cancelation fee was $20 for each remaining month. If you left the company after six months, the cancelation fee would be $20 x 30 months = $600!

Two interesting results came from Just Energy. The company offered a 24-month price of 9.6 cents per kWh over 24 months. A little further down, Just Energy’s 36-month plan promised 10 cents per kWh. But wouldn’t a lengthier contract merit a better price?

Here’s the deal: Electricity companies buy electricity on the retail energy market and sell it to you. The retail prices they pay fluctuate. What Just Energy did with these two deals is offer a low cost over the long term while protecting itself from any electricity retail price changes.

Sample 3: Short-Term Electricity Deals

For this sample search, we used Waco’s zip code 76702 and looked for a 12-month, short-term, fixed-rate offer. It’s interesting to see how the choices changed based on location and search — there were 94 results.

Electricity Deal Comparison Chart Pricing 3

The cheapest deal offered this time was from Just Energy at just 8.5 cents per kWh for a three-month contract or 8.6 cents for a four-month agreement. Meanwhile, our old friend Amigo Energy offered 8.8 cents per KWh for three months.

Tara Energy has a 4-star rating and was sixth in this search, based on price, with 8.9 cents per kWh for a three-month contract. However, nearly all these short-term deals had high cancelation fees, so be sure of the contract length before committing.

By contrast, the most expensive company was Ambit Energy at 17.1 cents per kWh. Ambit Energy offered a variable rate, 100% renewable energy, lasted one month, and had no cancelation fees.
