  • Fixed rate category: In this TDU, on an average you will pay 7% more if you choose a 100% Green plan for a fixed rate product. Using the lowest fixed rate plans’ prices above, you will pay only 3% more if you go green. Converting this lowest rated percentage difference into estimated bills for 1000kWh/month, you will pay $3/month more if you go 100% green.
  • Variable rate category: Concerning a variable rate product, you will pay 25% more on average and 18% more if you selected the lowest rate. To illustrate this difference, taking a usage of 1000 kWh per month, you will be billed $15/month more if you selected the 100% green plan. This represents 2-3 drinks from your favorite coffee shop per month to reduce your footprint! Not so expensive?

What is the difference between green plans and carbon offsets? You will reduce your footprint with both, but they are different in many aspects:

  • Unit of measure: Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of CO₂ while green plans purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) and are measured in MWh.
  • Purpose: When you subscribe to a 100% green electricity plan, you will support directly renewable electricity development as you encourage the use, expansion and maintenance of renewable energy (such as Wind Power, Biomass generation, etc.) Using RECs your Energy Provider will substantiate your consumption renewable-ness. To learn more about RECs and Offset, consult this document from the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency). When you buy carbon offset, you will support projects and activities that avoid or reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere.
  • Consumer Claims: If your goal is to remove CO2 directly, buy carbon offset. If you prefer to support long term renewable energy generators, go for a 100% green plan.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.
