March 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the AEP North delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

NEW! Our team is now providing a comparison of rates with the previous month. It gives a view to the market trends and underlying variations in the retail electricity industry.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

Concerning the lowest rate for the two fixed rate products type, the common trend is a decrease. In contrast, the variable rate category is impacted by a significant price increase: +45.8%.

The highest rate for those most common plans decreased for the first category (-5.1%), increased slightly for the second one (+7%) and decreased again for the variable rate plan category (-4.1%). As the highest price 12-month fixed plan and variable plan were offered by Ambit Energy, the decreasing trend for these two types of plans is attributed to Ambit Energy lowering their prices.

The average rate decreased so slightly that the above table shows no change but decreased in fact by 0.048% for the 12mo-fixed rate.  It also slightly decreased for the 24mo-fixed rate category. Looking at the increase in the variable rate plan category (+21.5%) we can correlate this change with the loss of 25% in the number of REPs in this category: fewer players, less competition, higher rates … etc.

The number of REPs in those 3 categories is globally decreasing. Let’s have a look at the REPs that were no longer offering plans in those categories:
SPARK ENERGY LLC only offered 12 and 3mo-fixed rate plans in March while they offered a 24mo-fixed rate in the previous month. TRIEAGLE ENERGY LP is now only offering 12mo-fixed rate plan. DIRECT ENERGY, FIRST CHOICE POWER and WTU RETAIL ENERGY are REPs that only offered fixed rate plans in March although they offered variable rate plans in February.

We also noticed 7 REPs that offered some of the types of plans in the table above but stopped showing any offers at all since mid-February on the Power to Choose website:
ENERGY MONGER LLC, ENERGY TO GO, ENTRUST ENERGY INC, MIDAMERICAN ENERGY SERVICES LLC, POWER OF TEXAS HOLDINGS INC, PULSE POWER LLC, and VARSITY ENERGY LLC.

New players: YEP started offering fixed rate products in March while they were only offering variable rate plans the previous month. TEXPO ENERGY started offering 24mo-fixed rate plans in March but did offer fixed price plans of other contract term length in the previous month.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

The 100 % Green 12mo-Fixed rate Plans are the only category where we can see a global increase of rates comparing to February. 15 REPs were offering this product in February; only 8 in March.

FRONTIER UTILITIES, BULB, GREEN ENERGY EXCHANGE, ATG CLEAN ENERGY, CHARIOT ENERGY, VARSITY ENERGY LLC, TOMORROW ENERGY CORP, ENERGY TO GO and PULSE POWER LLC are REPs that previously offered some of the 100% green plans in the table above but stopped offering 100% green plans on the Power to Choose website since mid-February, which is when the weather crisis occurred.

TXU ENERGY is a new player in this category of plans. They started offering 100% green products in March.

The 100 % Green 24 mo-Fixed rate Plans have an average rate that slightly decreased (-2.9%) while the lowest rate decreased by 7.2%, and the highest didn’t change. The number of REPs in this category decreased by 33.3%.

The REPs that were no longer offering plans in this category all stopped to show offers on Power to Choose website: GREEN ENERGY EXCHANGE, ATG CLEAN ENERGY, CHARIOT ENERGY and TOMORROW ENERGY CORP.

Concerning the 100% green variable rate category, the two players that left the game are CHARIOT ENERGY and BULB. Those 2 REPs both stopped showing offers on the Power to Choose website since the winter storm in mid-February. These two players were offering low rates in this category, which may help explain the increase of 43.2% of the lowest rate and an increase of 22% of the average rate between this month and February. The highest rate was still offered by the same REP AMBIT ENERGY, which decreased by 4%.

If more than one product was available from the same REP for a given type of plan, EnergySavings.com only included the one with the lowest rate in its analysis.
Please note that as products and rates may change at any time in the day on Power to Choose; EnergySavings.com’s analysis is based on information captured in its single daily snapshot, and therefore cannot guarantee that every product and rate made available in the month has been captured. Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans. Those documents are available on the Power to Choose site if the plan is still currently offered. The rates listed may differ if the REP has changed their pricing.
