March 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the CenterPoint delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

NEW! Our team is now providing a comparison of rates with the previous month. It gives a view to the market trends and underlying variations in the retail electricity industry.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

The two fixed rate plan categories follow the same trends:

A global decrease in their rates: The lowest one by 1.1% and 5.7%, the highest one by 6.2% and 8.8% and the average by 4.6% and 5%.

Concerning the variable rate category, we saw an increase in the lowest rate by 25.9%, (probably explained by the loss of players that were offering lower rates), a small decrease of 5.7% of the highest rate and an increase of 14.3% of the average.

Looking at the number of REPs, we see here the same trend as in the other delivery areas – a global decrease for those categories of plans.

Some of the REPs who previously offered some of the plans in the table above completely stopped showing offers on the Power to Choose website since mid-February, which coincides with the weather crisis: MIDAMERICAN ENERGY SERVICES LLC, ENERGY TO GO, ENTRUST ENERGY INC, ENERGY MONGER LLC, BRILLIANT ENERGY LLC, PULSE POWER LLC, POWER OF TEXAS HOLDINGS INC.

Others changed their offer in March – SPARK ENERGY LLC, VARSITY ENERGY LLC and TRIEAGLE ENERGY LP were no longer offering 24mo-fixed rate plans, but they still offered other contract length fixed rate plans.

FIRST CHOICE POWER no longer offered variable rate plans but still had other plans on the Power to Choose website.

And finally, ELIGO ENERGY TX LLC only offered 3, and 18mo non-100% green fixed rate plans instead of 12 and 24mo-fixed rate plans in February.

We also noticed that some new players started offering some of the above 3 categories of plans: TEXPO ENERGY, FIRST CHOICE POWER and YEP.

Between February and March, the number of REPs showing offers on the Power to Choose website decreased also for the 100% green product categories. ATG CLEAN ENERGY, BULB, CHARIOT ENERGY, ENERGY TO GO, GREEN ENERGY EXCHANGE, PULSE POWER LLC, and TOMORROW ENERGY CORP are REPs from those 3 categories that were no longer showing offers on the Power to Choose website since mid-February. FRONTIER UTILITIES was no longer offering 100% green plans but were still offering other plans. CLEANSKY ENERGY and TXU ENERGY are two REPs that started to show offers in one of the above 100% green categories in March.

The lowest rate of the 100% green 12mo-fixed rate category did not change. The highest rate increased by 21.6%, and the average slightly increased.

Concerning the 100% green 24mo-fixed rate category, the lowest rate decreased by 6.5%, the highest did not change, and the average decreased by 3.5%.

Looking at the 100% green variable rate category, the lowest rate increased by 40.2% (losing REPs that were offering lower rates may explain this rise), the highest decreased by 5.6%, and the average increased by 18.1%.

The tables above list the lowest price in cents/kWh offered by each retail electricity provider (REP) for a given type of plan for a monthly usage of 2000 kWh. If more than one product was available from the same REP for a given type of plan, EnergySavings.com only included the one with the lowest rate in its analysis.
Please note that as products and rates may change at any time in the day on Power to Choose;  EnergySavings.com’s analysis is based on information captured in its single daily snapshot, and therefore cannot guarantee that every product and rate made available in the month has been captured. Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans. Those documents are available on the Power to Choose site if the plan is still currently offered. The rates listed may differ if the REP has changed their pricing.
