May 2021: What is the Electricity Market Trend for the Oncor Delivery Area?

NEW this month! Our team is now analyzing rates using 1000 kWh instead of 2000 kWh as the estimated monthly consumption used for price comparison. We made this change because according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the residential average monthly consumption in Texas is 1140 kWh (in 2019).

We will spice things up this month by focusing on green energy. We will bring answers to a frequent question asked by our customers:

If I “go green” with my electricity plan, how would my bill be impacted?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* are analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by a REP.

In this TDU, PULSE POWER LLC and ENERGY TO GO are two providers that joined the game in May in the fixed rate category. Those 2 REPs were not offering plans on the Power to Choose website the previous month. On the other hand, we noticed that HERITAGE POWER LLC stopped showing offers completely (all category of plans) on the Power to Choose website towards the end of April 2021. These changes explain the 4% variation we observe in the number of REPs.

We observe two opposite trends in these two categories: The fixed rate category has a 2% increase in its average rate. On the other hand, the variable rate average rate decreased by 3%. Except from these two variations, the market is generally stable from April to May 2021.

Concerning the 100% green products in April and May 2021, we only captured an increase of 1% for the average rate of the fixed rate category. The only other noticeable change is the entrance of 3 players in this same category: OCTOPUS ENERGY, PULSE POWER LLC and ENERGY TO GO. The first of which was previously only offering fixed plans with a different duration and a variable rate. The two others started to show offers in the 100% green category on the Power to Choose website in May 2021.

Green or Not Green?

Oncor Delivery Area – May 2021: How fixed rates and variable rate plans compare 2?

Fixed Rate Plans, 12-mo         (cents/kWh) Variable Rate Plans                  (cents/kWh)
100% green Not green Difference 100% green Not green Difference
Lowest 8.8 8.8 0% 9.5 8.0 19%
Highest 14.5 12.8 13% 17.1 16.9 1%
Average rate 10.5 9.8 8% 13.6 10.6 28%
Number of REPs 14 29 -52% 3 11 -73%

2Trends compare in percentage the average rate of each category of products. This table compares the average rates price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each category.

In this TDU, on an average you will pay 8% more if you choose a 100% Green plan for a fixed rate product. Using the lowest fixed rate plans’ prices above, you will pay the same price if you go green.  Concerning a variable rate product, you will pay 28% more on average. Taking the lowest rate into consideration, your monthly bill would be $15 more if you subscribe to a 100% green product. This represents about 3 drinks at your favorite coffee shop; it is not expensive to go green! (Calculation for a usage of 1000 kWh per month.) If you are looking for a variable rate plan and like the non-green plan and REP options but do want to help the environment, you may want to check out companies like Terrapass3 to go green for your electricity consumption, at possibly a lower price.

The tables above list the lowest price in cents/kWh offered by each retail electricity provider (REP) for a given type of plan for a monthly usage of 1000 kWh. If more than one product was available from the same REP for a given type of plan, EnergySavings.com only included the one with the lowest rate in its analysis. Please note that as products and rates may change at any time in the day on Power to Choose; EnergySavings.com’s analysis is based on information captured in its single daily snapshot, and therefore cannot guarantee that every product and rate made available in the month has been captured. Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans. Those documents are available on the Power to Choose site if the plan is still currently offered. The rates listed may differ if the REP has changed its pricing.
