The “Highest” row above shows the highest price among all the observed lowest price plans offered by REPs offering that type of plan in this region for each month.

In this delivery area, a new REP had joined the game: RANCHERO POWER. For the fixed rate category, the prices were stable between these two months, except for a slight increase of the highest rate (8%).Concerning the variable rate category, we captured an increase of the lowest rate by 7%.

TNMP Delivery Area – June 2021: Rates and Trends for Most Common 100% Green Plans:1

The 8% decrease in the number of players for this fixed rate, 100% green category is explained by one REP not showing offers anymore in June: IBERDROLA TEXAS. Other than that, the 100% green products in the table above are stable between these two months. We only observed a slight increase of 3% of the lowest rate for the first category and 2% for the second one.

Green or Not Green?

TNMP Delivery Area – June 2021: How fixed rates and variable rate plans compare 2?

Fixed Rate Plans, 12-mo         (cents/kWh) Variable Rate Plans          (cents/kWh)
100% green Not green Trend 100% green Not green Trend
Lowest 10.2 10.0 2% 10.9 9.4 16%
Highest 15.9 14.0 14% 17.7 17.5 1%
Average rate 11.9 11.3 6% 14.6 12.0 22%
Number of REPs 11 29 -62% 3 12 -75%

2This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan.  The “Highest” row above shows the highest price among all the lowest price plans offered by REPs offering that type of plan in this region for each month.

The data we captured shows that, on average a 100% green plan is 6% more expensive if you choose a 12-month fixed rate plan and 22% if you prefer a variable rate plan. Don’t draw any conclusion just yet! There are other things to consider:

  • Those differences in price can be explained by the lack of offers: only 3 REPs are offering the 100% green product (variable rate) versus 11 for the non-green product. Concerning the fixed rate category, only 11 REPs are offering 100% green plans while 29 are offering non-green product
  • Second, you need to put into perspective the financial impact based on your yearly consumption, for a fixed rate plan, using the lowest rates from the table above and assuming a usage of 1000 kWh/ per month, you will pay $24 more per year ($2/month)
  • On the other hand, if you want to restore the balance for not only your electricity consumption but also your daily activities (flights, car journeys, events, etc.)you may want to consider the option of purchasing carbon offsets separately. Companies like Terrapass 3 offer you monthly subscription plans or one-time payments to offset your carbon footprint depending on your lifestyle. You could offset not only your electricity consumption but also a flight, an event, car travels, and most things that leave a carbon footprint.

The tables above list the lowest price in cents/kWh offered by each retail electricity provider (REP) for a given type of plan for a monthly usage of 1000 kWh. If more than one product was available from the same REP for a given type of plan, EnergySavings.com only included the one with the lowest rate in its analysis. Please note that as products and rates may change at any time in the day on Power to Choose; EnergySavings.com’s analysis is based on information captured in its single daily snapshot, and therefore cannot guarantee that every product and rate made available in the month has been captured. Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans. Those documents are available on the Power to Choose site if the plan is still currently offered. The rates listed may differ if the REP has changed its pricing.
