March 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the AEP Central delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

NEW! Our team is now providing a comparison of rates with the previous month. It gives a view to the market trends and underlying variations in the retail electricity industry.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

The lowest rates of the table decreased for fixed rate plans but increased for the variable rate plan.

The highest rates are globally decreasing in the table.

Looking at the averages, we see a slight decrease for the fixed rate plans (-0.6% and -1.8%) and a 12.8% rise for variable rate plans.

The number of REPs in these 3 categories globally decreased:

The following REPs, who previously offered some of the products in the table above, are not showing offers at all since mid-February:  MIDAMERICAN ENERGY SERVICES LLC, POWER OF TEXAS HOLDINGS INC, ENERGY TO GO, ENTRUST ENERGY INC, ENERGY MONGER LLC, VARSITY ENERGY LLC, and PULSE POWER LLC.

CPL RETAIL ENERGY, TRIEAGLE ENERGY LP and SPARK ENERGY LLC were offering 24mo-fixed rate plans the previous month. The first two were offering other fixed contract lengths in March while the last one was still offering 24mo-fixed rate plans, but they added a minimum usage fee / credit component to their plan.

CPL RETAIL ENERGY, DIRECT ENERGY and FIRST CHOICE POWER were offering variable rate plans, and they all left this category of products by only offering fixed rate plans in March.

We also noticed some new entrances within these 3 categories: YEP and TEXPO ENERGY.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

The 100% green plans of this delivery area are also impacted by an important loss of REPs. -43.8% and -30% for the fixed rate plans and -40% for the variable rate one. Most of these REPs were no longer showing any offers on the Power to Choose website since mid-February except for FRONTIER UTILITIES, who still had non-100% green offers on Power to Choose. The only new player is TXU ENERGY, which started to offer 100% green 12mo-fixed rate plans in March.

The first category is impacted in March by a rate increase: +1.1% for the lowest rate, +21.4% for the highest one and +5.8% for the average one compared to February. With a decline in the number of players by 43.8%, the decrease in competition may explain this impact on the rates.

Looking at the 100% green 24mo-fixed rate plans, we don’t observe the same trend: The lowest rate decreased by 3.3%, there was no variation for the highest one and the average rate decreased by 2%.

The variable rate category was also impacted similarly as the first category by an important loss of REPs. The lowest rate increased by 28%, the highest one decreased slightly while the average increased by 15.9%.
