March 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the Oncor delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

NEW! Our team is now providing a comparison of rates with the previous month. It gives a view to the market trends and underlying variations in the retail electricity industry.

Number of REPs 28 35 -20.0% 25 29 -13.8% 9 11 -18.2%

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

Overall, the number of REPs offering plans in those 3 most common categories of plans decreased:

-20.0% for 12mo Fixed Rate Plans, -13.8% for 24mo Fixed Rate Plans, -18.2% for Variable Rate Plans.  While the reason may be different for each REP that stopped offering plans in March, we believe the underlying reason is most likely related to the financial impact caused by the weather crisis the state of Texas faced in February 2021.

We also noticed some “new players” in these categories of products on the Power to Choose website:

YEP is now offering fixed plan products while they were only offering variable rate plans last month. HERITAGE POWER LLC, FIRST CHOICE POWER and TEXPO ENERGY are REPs that also started to offer plans in these categories on the Power to Choose website in March.

Lowest rates of the popular 12mo-fixed rate plans didn’t vary a lot between those two months as apposed the two other popular products of this table. The 24mo-fixed rate category shows a big variation of its lowest rate as it decreased by 22%. The variable rate category is also showing a significant change with a lowest rate that increased by 36%.

When we look at the highest rates captured, there is not a global trend to these 3 categories of plans:

The 12mo-fixed rate category decreased by 4.7% while the 24mo-fixed rate category increased by 10.5% and the variable rate category decreased by 4.1%.

Concerning the average rates, the two fixed rate plan categories showed a slight decrease (-0.4% for the 12mo-fixed rate and 24mo-fixed rate.) In contrast, the variable rate category showed a bigger increase (+18.5%).

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

For the 100% green products, we observe the same trend concerning the number of players. The number of REPs offering plans on the Power to Choose website decreased for every product category.

Here is a list of the new REPs in those plan categories:

TXU ENERGY started to offer 100% green 12mo-fixed rate plans in March. They were only offering plans with 6% renewable content before.

CLEANSKY ENERGY started to show 100% green 24mo-fixed rate plans this month, they were only offering shorter contract lengths before.

MP2 ENERGY TEXAS LLC started to offer plans on the Power to Choose website in March.

The 100 % green 12mo-fixed rate plans category has experienced a rise in its rates compared to February. The lowest rate increased by 4.7%, the highest by 25.5% and the average by 4.0%.

The 100 % green 24mo-fixed rate plans category was stable compared to the 12-month plan. The lowest and highest rate did not change (although not offered by the same REP) and the average rate slightly decreased by 1.4%.

The 100 % green variable rate category is showing an increase of 37.2% of its lowest rate compared to the previous month. This increase in price may be attributed to lower competitiveness in this category due to two of the REP’s offering lower prices in February no longer offering a 100% green variable plan.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans.
