March 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the TNMP delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

NEW! Our team is now providing a comparison of rates with the previous month. It gives a view to the market trends and underlying variations in the retail electricity industry.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

In this delivery area, as in all others for the month of March, we see a decrease in the number of REPs in each category. The following REPs are ones that had offers in the above categories in February, but no longer offering any offers on Power to Choose since mid-February, which is when the winter storm hit Texas: ENTRUST ENERGY INC, PULSE POWER LLC, MIDAMERICAN ENERGY SERVICES LLC, ENERGY MONGER LLC, POWER OF TEXAS HOLDINGS INC, and ENERGY TO GO.

Some other REPs chose not to continue offering plans on these categories but were still showing other plans on Power to Choose website. TRIEAGLE ENERGY LP and SPARK ENERGY LLC were no longer offering 24mo-fixed rate plans, and FIRST CHOICE POWER was no longer offering variable plans.
We also noticed two new players that started to show products in one of those 3 categories: YEP and TEXPO ENERGY.

The common trend to the fixed rate plans is a global “light” decrease of their rates (except for the 24mo-fixed rate plan highest rate that did not change.

On the other hand, the variable rate category has a different trend. The lowest rate increased by 31.8%, the highest rate decreased slightly by 5.6% and the average rate increased by 13.2%.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each REP that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by an REP.

The number of REPs in the 100% green product categories also decreased: TOMORROW ENERGY CORP, GREEN ENERGY EXCHANGE, ENERGY TO GO, ATG Clean Energy, CHARIOT ENERGY, PULSE POWER LLC, GREEN ENERGY EXCHANGE and BULB are all REPs that were previously offering some of the above 100% green plans but were no longer offering plans at all on Power to Choose since mid-February. FRONTIER UTILITIES and VARSITY ENERGY LLC were no longer offering 100% green plans in March but still had other offers on Power to Choose.
TXU ENERGY, MP2 ENERGY TEXAS LLC, and CLEANSKY ENERGY were all new players here. They started to offer a product in one of those categories while they were not the previous month.

The 100% green 12mo-fixed rate category is showing a general rate increase. The lowest rate slightly increased by 1%, the highest one by 21% and the average by 3.9%. The important number of REPs that left the game may be explaining this trend.

The 100% green 24mo-fixed rate category is not showing the same trend: -7.8 % for the lowest, no change for the highest rate and -1.8% for the average rate.

The 100% green variable rate category has a lowest rate that increased by 30%, a highest rate that decreased by 5.5% and the average increased by 15.2%. Again here, losing 40% of the players that were offering lower rate offers may explain this average increase of rates.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans.
