April 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the AEP North delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

Concerning the lowest rate, the 12mo fixed rate and the variable rate product types showed the common trend is a decrease. It was a significant one for the latter as the price is lowered by 30%. The 24mo fixed rate product is stable.

The highest rate for those plan types is stable.

The average rate decreased slightly for the 12mo fixed rate and was stable for the 24mo. A higher decrease in average rate was observed for the variable rate plans.

The number of REPs in those 3 categories is globally increasing. Let’s have a look at the new players in this TDU:

  • 12mo, Fixed rate plans: DIRECT ENERGY, FIRST CHOICE POWER and WTU RETAIL ENERGY are now offering plans in this category. Those 3 REPs were already offering fixed rate products before but with a different contract length.
  • 24mo, Fixed rate plans: DIRECT ENERGY, WTU RETAIL ENERGY and TRIEAGLE ENERGY LP were already offering fixed rate plans on the Power to Choose website, but their plans had different durations. TEXPO ENERGY stopped offering a 24-mo product in April.
  • Variable rate plans: DIRECT ENERGY, FIRST CHOICE POWER and WTU RETAIL ENERGY were only offering fixed rate plans and started to offer variable rate products in April.

The number of players in the 100 % Green 12mo-Fixed rate Plans is stable for every category of plans in the table above. The exact same REPs were offering products in the previous month. We can observe a trend to stability here considering that those exact same categories lost between 30 and 46 % of their players between February and March 2021.

Having a look at the rates, the common trend is a decrease or stable price, while our last report showed the opposite for the previous period (access the full report for previous month here).

The 100 % Green 12mo-Fixed rate Plans had their lowest rate decrease by 5 % and average rate decrease by 1%, while the highest rate remained the same. This is explained by GEXA ENERGY and CLEANSKY ENERGY both slightly decreasing their prices between the two months.

The 100 % Green 24mo-Fixed rate Plans had their highest rate decrease by 9 % and average rate decrease by 3%, while the lowest rate remained the same. This is explained by CLEANSKY ENERGY and GREEN MOUNTAIN ENERGY COMPANY decreasing its prices between the two periods.

Concerning the 100% green variable rate category, INFUSE ENERGY LLC decreased its rate significantly between March and April while all the other REPs kept their price stable. This explains a decrease of 23% in the lowest rate in the table above.
