April 2021: What is the electricity market trend for the CenterPoint delivery area?

Our team at EnergySavings.com is capturing daily snapshots of electricity plans from the Power to Choose website. Data collected* is analyzed monthly to give you an understanding of the offers available and the market trends. Grouping the most common plans by category, we analyze the same plan categories every month to give you an apples-to-apples comparison.

Our analysis is based on information captured once daily from the Power to Choose website, and rates may vary at any time. We have excluded from our analysis plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits,” “Time of Use,” and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose.

1Trends compare in percentage the rate of the previous month for the same category of products. This table compares the lowest price offered by each Retail Electric Provider that offered the respective type of plan in each month. The “Highest” row above compares the highest of the lowest price offered by a Retail Electric Provider.

The two fixed rate plan categories follow the same trend:

A common slight increase in their rates, the lowest one by 1% for the first category and the highest one by 1% also for the second category. In general, the average rate remained stable.

Concerning the variable rate category, we see a decrease in the lowest rate by 25% and a decrease of 9% in the average.

Looking at the number of Retail Electric Providers, there is some movement in these categories, but we cannot conclude there is a common trend in this TDU.

For the 12mo fixed rate, the 3% decrease is partially explained by two Retail Electric Providers joining the party in April: DIRECT ENERGY and FIRST CHOICE POWER. Those two Retail Electric Providers offer low rates in this category (see tables below to see all rates / REPs in April). This variation is also explained by three Retail Electric Providers that are not showing anymore offers in this category VARSITY ENERGY LLC, TEXPO ENERGY and GRIDPLUS ENERGY.

Despite the number of Texas retail electric providers remaining the same for the 24mo fixed rate plans, there is some REP movement: DIRECT ENERGY and TRIEAGLE ENERGY LP started offering such a plan while TEXPO ENERGY and GRIDPLUS ENERGY stopped.

Concerning the variable rate one, DIRECT ENERGY and FIRST CHOICE POWER also started to offer these plans in April. They offered low rates compared to most of the other electricity providers.

Between March and April, the number of Retail Electric Providers showing offers on the Power to Choose website decreased in one category of the 100% green table above: VARSITY ENERGY LLC is no longer showing offers in this latest month, explaining the 9% decrease in the number of electric providers for the 12mo fixed rate electricity plans.

Concerning the rates, there is no big variation here. The 2% decrease of the lowest rate in the first category is explained by GEXA ENERGY decreasing slightly their electricity rates between those 2 months. Regarding the 24mo fixed rate plans, the highest rate decreased by 9%: GREEN MOUNTAIN ENERGY COMPANY is the electric provider that applied a change and lowered its price in April.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you feel that any meaningful data has not been captured and EnergySavings.com may, at its sole discretion, issue a correction to the report. The analysis is performed by excluding plans that are marked as “Minimum usage fees/credits”, “Time of Use”, and “Prepaid” according to the data captured from Power to Choose. For more information about the electricity plans mentioned in this report, please consult both the Electricity Fact Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOS) for those plans.
